Vonj, zvok in pripoved zgodbe pomagajo, hkrati z dotikanjem, doživeti umetnino in ustvariti njeno celostno dojemanje.

Up Close
Old Damage – New Solutions

The paintings presented at the exhibition were kept in storage for several years as they were too damaged to be exhibited. The reason for the damage to the paintings can be traced primarily to the time of their creation – between 1900 and 1924, characteristic of using inferior supports (thin coarse canvas or jute), only slightly treated with adhesives, without a lining, and thick oil unvarnished layers – and various attempts at consolidating and lining the paintings in the past due to cracking and falling off of the paint layers. Many such procedures seem inappropriate if we look at them from today's perspective. With the help of the exhibited items, some already conserved-restored, others still being treated, as well as photographs, videos and technological studies, the exhibition highlights the shortcomings of the old ways of saving paintings on canvas and also today's solutions.

As part of our efforts to bring the understanding of works of art and our work closer to the widest possible circle of people that could also take some of the materials into their hands and feel them, the exhibition also includes technological studies of different methods of lining supports and filling in the missing parts as well as technological studies of details of selected paintings. The results of the associated three-month student innovative project for social benefit (ŠPIK) entitled Feel the Art represent added value. The title has a double meaning – it expresses both the touch and the emotional perception of art. Artwork models are prepared at several levels – as a "map" of different shapes included in the composition of the whole artwork, as details and as a model of a motif. In addition to the touch, the smell, sound and the narration of a story help to experience the art and create its holistic perception.

The purpose of the presentation is to learn about artworks from different views, experience them by integrating different senses and encourage visitors to think about the meaning of the presented works of art, and the ways of storing, appropriate maintaining and saving them.

The associated project Feel the Art (ŠIPK) is co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia and the European Union as part of the European Social Fund.
